Looking For DA Alternatives

Wed Jun 26, 2013, 7:44 PM

During my online break I re-evaluated what sites I need to ditch for my spiritual health, and while I would love to say here on DeviantArt, I can't justify continuing to visit a site that makes it nearly impossible to avoid suggestive images (thanks to More Like This).

I still want to showcase my art on a site and be around a community of friends however, so I want to know of other art sites I can join. They don't need to be huge just a good place to post art. Preferably made for all-ages and relatively clean or otherwise have good filtering and browsing options. If there's an art gallery site that has an optional full block on mature images (to the point where I wouldn't know they existed or can be set to unviewable) that would be very nice. I'm open to art forums as well, again, so long as they keep to some form of cleanliness standard.

I'll be keeping an eye out on my page here for replies and I might post a piece or two if I draw something but I won't be browsing at all.

To those of your who feel like I'm being a prude or something, you're going to have to bear with me. This is something I have to do regardless of how much I enjoy the community and friends here on DA. Please suggest alternatives and I'll hopefully see you there. :)

Have you looked at Wysp.ws? It's a great site from what I've heard, and it functions like dA community-wise (but without the drama). I've went through it, and it's denfiniately worth checking out! :3

I too want to find other sites than just this one. I pretty much slowed down on random searches because many things I don't agree with come up. More like this can be useful and not useful. I wish the admins here would at least move it down on the page.

I think it'd be best if it were optional to begin with (both for personal viewing on all deviantations and for guest viewing on my own deviantations) but I'm not holding my breath for that to happen.

I'm still on the lookout though. Nabyn seems like the closest thing to what I want but it's basically on lockdown seeing as it's invite only. There's also Concept Art, but that place underwent an overhaul that makes it look ugly and convoluted, and they also don't appear to have rules on content.

There is Sheezyart, but it is under maintenance.

yeah. I'm curious to know how that'll be when it's finally out. Really hoping it's like DA but without all the stupid useless annoying features.

I agree. The features here are nice, but they are overdoing it and not focusing on real issues.

If you find one and go there let me know. I'd like to keep in touch, even if I'm on-line far less than I used to be.

While there's plenty of legitimate uses for technology, much of what's floating around the Internet isn't particularly helpful to body, soul, or spirit. A break can do wonders for one's sanity.

There are a bunch of art sites besides dA, but most of them contain more explicit material than even dA does. Tumblr might be a good place to share your work, but if you're concerned about seeing NSFW content, it can be difficult to escape racy images there unless you stick to following a highly select group of people. Also, a lot of Tumblr artists have a relatively small proportion of art on their blogs, making it tough to find what you want. Of course, online forums are still a good source for sharing art, and many of them focus on safe-for-work art (I run a couple of them myself *hint hint*). And if you're lucky, you could always get real-life buddies interested in your creative pursuits.

I actually really like forums a lot. The problem is that most art forums are dieing out. I've had an idea for a long time for an art gallery/forum hybrid where the gallery is displayed similar to DA but instead of being the only thing there it's integrated as the main board of the larger forum, with the other boards displayed alongside or below it like a normal forum would. The gallery would work like normal but the comments would be more like posts on a forum in chronological order rather than sub-scripted. The other boards would work just like a forum, but ideally it would work as an internal image host for people to post their images on any board using tags of some kind. And of course, there would probably be stricter, more definitive rules for NSFW content, and extensive filtering options for suggestive grey-areas.

Not that I know beans about making anything like it aside from making another generic art forum but if you know of any really great ones then please suggest them and I'll have a look.

I've been to a few art forums, although most of them are either dying or have a niche I don't fit in.
